It's time to learn history from the stupidest guys you know: Bill S Preston, Esq and Ted Theodore Logan! Together, they are Wyld Stallyns! Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are two lazy, talent-less, losers who are destined for greatness, but they don't even know it yet. They want to form the greatest rock band in history, but don't know how to play their instruments. They're failing history, and if they don't knock their final project out of the park they will, then Ted is going to be sent away to military school in Alaska. Most Heinous!
What they don't know is Rufus (played by the late, great George Carlin) is being sent back in time from a world that has been put at peace by the music of Wyld Stallyns. If Ted goes to military school, the band never forms, and their future doesn't exist. Bogus! Rufus comes back through time to help them pass their project by giving them a time traveling phone booth (huge Doctor Who reference, by the way). With the phone booth, they travel through time and kidnap famous people in history - like Socrates, Billy the Kid, Joan of Arc, and Genghis Khan - to use for their report. Most Excellent!
This is a goofy concept that just nails it. Using movies we've already covered, this is basically "Airheads" meets "Back to the Future". Like a lot of the movies we have talked about - and will talk about - this movie is pure fun. If you don't think so, watch the scenes of these famous historical figures at the mall. I mean,Socrates and Billy the Kid basically become best friends. And there are no repercussions on the time stream. They don't even pretend like that's a possibility. It is purely for entertainment value.
The soundtrack is great. Watching all these guys jam out in their own way to Extreme's "Play with Me" is reason to watch this movie alone. If you haven't seen it (we can't be friends - kidding!) you should check it out. It's only an hour and a half, so it's not like you're wasting too much time on it. And it's a rare good Keanu Reeves movie. It's kind of what made him famous, and what he will forever be seen as (except in John Wick - Holy shit! He definitely was not Ted in that movie!).
And if you know French, this movie is probably exponentially funnier. Napoleon only speaks in French, but almost everything he says is delivered in the form of one liners, so I'm sure its a riot.
