Bruce Nolan is a down-on-his-luck news reporter. He's late for work, his news story was passed over for his asshole coworker Evan's, and his dog won't stop pissing inside the house. Evan gets the anchor job that Bruce has been working hard for over the last few months, and then he loses his job because he snaps on live television. This is when he meets God (played, of course, by Morgan Freeman). God grants him all of his powers for a while since Bruce thinks he can do the job better while God himself takes a vacation. With these new powers, he takes to fixing his own life, then tries to fix world problems, only to mess everything up.
This is a fun movie, whether you are religious or not (and as I mentioned back during "The Book of Eli", I am not). And it taught us two very important lessons: magic voodoo powers only makes things worse and to fix problems you need to handle them yourself, and how to spell "beautiful".
"Bruce Almighty" had a pretty original story, that was fun and enjoyable all around. It didn't break any barriers, but it made a point AND worked with Jim Carrey's strengths; there aren't many movies that do both of those things. This was also the movie that put Steve Carell on the map. I do recommend it, especially if you like the Carrey/Carell comedy styles. There was a sequel - "Evan Almighty" - but we don't own it, it was widely considered a bad movie, and I didn't feel like even searching for it anywhere. Admittedly, I've never seen it and have zero interest in ever doing so.
